The Long Beach Police Department cited 76 people in a motorcycle safety operation held throughout the city over the weekend.

The LBPD’s Traffic Section patrolled the streets during the two-day, five-hour each day operation looking for unsafe driving by motorcyclists and vehicle drivers.

The LBPD cited 34 motorcyclists for unsafe driving, 14 drivers for unsafe driving, 15 motorcyclists for non-Department of Transportation approved motorcycle helmets, four motorcyclists for not having a motorcycle endorsement on their license, six motorcyclists for suspended licenses and three drivers for not having a driver’s license.

According to the LBPD, there were 295 motorcyclists injured and 19 motorcycle-related fatalities during a three-year period from January 2011 to December 2013 in Long Beach.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
