The union representing employees like custodians, maintenance staff and nutrition workers says many of its members make minimum wage and deserve a larger raise.
The tests arrived too late to screen kids before they returned from winter break, so the LBUSD nows recommends parents use them when they’re notified of possible exposures.
Despite the challenges of filling those vacancies, Eftychiou said there are no plans to close schools.
On Monday, the LBUSD had 369 requests for a substitute teacher, a little more than triple what they’d normally get on the Monday after winter break, an LBUSD spokesperson said.
“We dropped our kids off today and I had a sinking feeling that I’m throwing my kiddos into some kind of a fire,” one parent said.
The two vacant buildings at 999 Atlantic Ave. and 4310 Long Beach Blvd. are among the seven properties the district has designated “surplus” land.
Long Beach Unified expects to rely heavily on its reserves in the next few years as declining enrollment and lower attendance hurt its bottom line.
“State and local law enforcement officers have investigated the threat, did not find any specific links to Long Beach Unified School District, and have determined the threat is not credible,” the LBUSD said.
Time will tell if full-day kindergarten is in the cards for Long Beach going forward, although the fact that it’s being formally discussed is in itself a big move in that direction.
Rather than traditional separate lockers for boys and girls, the new facilities will have individual showers and changing rooms, as opposed to the communal open areas featured in the district’s existing pools.
