It was a 70-year-old man living in his parked station wagon who was killed when a teenage driver fell asleep at the wheel on Long Beach Boulevard, the coroner’s office announced today.

The crash occurred about 4 a.m. June 10 in the 2700 block of Long Beach Boulevard, the Long Beach Police Department reported.

Francis O’Brien, 70, died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter. O’Brien had been living in the vehicle, Winter said.

According to police, a 19-year-old Long Beach woman was driving south on Long Beach Boulevard in a 1999 Mercedes-Benz E320 when the crash occurred.

“It appears that (the) driver fell asleep and collided into the rear of 1993 Ford Escort LX station wagon,” a police statement said. “The Ford was parked along the curb … and (O’Brien) was asleep in the driver’s seat of that vehicle.”

The female motorist was interviewed by police, and the investigation was ongoing. Her name was not released.

“Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in this collision,” police said.

Police asked for anyone with information on the case to call detectives at 562-570-7355 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
