A business owner was briefly detained by Long Beach police after officers found him armed with a gun on the roof of his establishment, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched regarding a subject on a roof armed with a gun near Canal Avenue and Cowles Street in the city’s Westside on Tuesday, May 17 at about 6:00AM, according to Sgt. Brad Johnson of the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Arriving officers made contact with the man who was then detained. A weapon was recovered, he said.

Police then briefly activated SWAT after further investigation led them to believe a subject with a warrant for his arrest was possibly barricaded inside the location. Johnson said the warrant was for a weapons charge and there was a possibility a weapon was also inside.

As the investigation continued police confirmed the warrant for the subject inside was no longer valid and the man was not inside the location.

Police also found that the original subject detained was the owner of the business, who was investigating a suspicious noise he heard, according to Johnson.

The investigation remains ongoing.
