Following in the footsteps of major cities across the country, the City of Long Beach yesterday announced its launch of Recyclebank, an public-private incentive program that rewards residents for recycling at home and other green activities.

Through Recyclebank’s partnership with Waste Management, Long Beach became the largest city in California to adopt the free program, which awards points to registered individuals weekly based on the weight of recyclables picked up from the curb.

Long Beach has long been a leader in waste management and recycling, winning national awards for its innovative efforts to reduce landfill trash and encourage better removal practices.

Two years ago, however, Second District Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal met with Recyclebank representatives ago and initiated conversations to determine how the program could be incorporated into the City’s current recycling efforts.

“Recyclebank will not only raise awareness about the impact of our daily activities on the environment, it will harness Long Beach’s collective green power for the benefit of local businesses and residents,” Lowenthal said. “The City’s environmentally friendly policies help our marine habitat, create more sustainable communities and contribute to a stronger tourism industry and local economy.”

To begin earning points—which can be redeemed for discounts and deals from major brands and local businesses—residents must sign up on the Recyclebank website. Those registering before October 15 will be automatically entered to win an Apple iPad.

In addition to tracking and redeeming rewards, the website also offers opportunities to earn more points through “gaming for good” strategies which aim to educate people on positive living practices and, in turn, influence behaviors offline. Recyclebank also includes cell phone apps where you can report additional recycling efforts.

The New York City-based Recyclebank operates in about 300 communities in the United States and the United Kingdom, with members typically earning points valued at $160 each year.
