Residents are invited to celebrate the grand opening of an 11-foot-wide pedestrian path that runs along 3.1 miles of Long Beach’s shoreline this Saturday, May 30, at Marina Green Park, city officials announced today.

The new path, located on the city’s shoreline between Shoreline Drive and 54th Place at Belmont Shore, will be for pedestrians and joggers, with dogs and other animals excluded.

“The new path increases beach access and coastal recreation opportunities, and promotes an active and healthy lifestyle,” said Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement.

The path was constructed from a resin-based surface that is durable enough to withstand the coastal environment, but also less rigid and more conducive to walking and running than concrete, according to a press release.

“Greater safety and access will inspire more residents to use our wonderful beach for recreation and enjoyment,” said Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal.

The $6.4 million project began last October and was financed through Tidelands Operations Funds.

The ceremony will be held at 9:30AM and feature food trucks, a Kid’s Zone and a concert by the 80s-90s tribute band Knyght Ryder at Marina Green Park, 386 East Shoreline Drive.

A Beach Path Celebration 5K Run will begin at 10:00AM.

Expected guests include Mayor Robert Garcia, Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal, Councilwoman Suzie Price and members of the Department of Park, Recreation and Marine, and the Tidelands Capital Improvement Division.
