Recreation Park just received a brand new sand volleyball court, complete with standard court specifications and newly built features ready to accommodate the popularly played sport and its participants.

The City of Long Beach has invited the public to attend the Grand Opening Ceremony, set for Saturday, June 4 at 1:30PM, to commemorate the court’s opening, now located between Park Avenue and the Band Shell, north of 7th Street and south of Federation Drive.

“Recreation Park is known for its many sports facilities from the fly casting pond, lawn bowling greens, Billie Jean King Tennis Center, Joe Rodgers Softball Stadium, Blair Field and two golf courses,” said Councilwoman Suzie Price in a statement. “I am excited that this new volleyball court will add to the amenities for residents who want a fun way to stay active.”

The new court replaces a run-down volleyball court area and is larger than the once-existing court, matching standard sand court specifications. Additionally, new drainage features, poles and netting have been installed, as well as a soft court edge instead of a concrete border, to make sand court play safer and more enjoyable.

“Residents will love the opportunity to play on the new sand volleyball court, located near picnic sites in beautiful Recreation Park,” said Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement. “These types of projects support Long Beach’s livability goals and are another reason why our City is a great place to live, work and play.”

The project’s cost was about $45,000 and funded by one-time Parks, Playgrounds and Library infrastructure funds that the city council allocated in Fiscal Year 2014, according to the release.

Recreation Park is located at 4900 East Seventh Street.
