As part of the City of Long Beach Peace Week activities, those interested in signing up for health insurance are encouraged to do so at the 28th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace and Unity Celebration, to take place on Saturday, January 16 at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.

“I want to personally encourage all residents without health insurance to enroll themselves and their families through Covered California,” said Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement. “My thanks to Councilmember Andrews, as well our Health Department, the Children’s Clinic, and Molina Healthcare for their support and leadership.”

To be held immediately following the parade and as part of the White House Healthy Communities Challenge, the event is open to the entire community. From noon to 5:00PM, information booths from the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, The Children’s Clinic Serving Children and Their Families, Molina Healthcare and members of the Long Beach Health Access Coalition will be available to answer questions and enroll individuals in MediCal, Covered California or MyHealthLA, according to the announcement.

“This year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace and Unity celebration theme is Infinite Hope,” stated Councilmember Dee Andrews. “His message of hope is one that calls on us all to expand health care coverage to all Americans, and I encourage people to take a moment to celebrate hope by getting enrolled in health insurance.”

Those who wish to enroll in Covered CA must bring the following documents: birth certificate, U.S. passport or resident alien card (green card), proof of income such as recent paychecks and 2014 tax forms, proof of Los Angeles County residency such as driver’s license, utility or phone bills, rental agreement and Social Security cards for everyone in the family applying for health insurance. For 2016 coverage, the Open Enrollment Period ends on January 31, 2016, while people may qualify for Special Enrollment Periods allowing them to enroll outside of Open Enrollment if they have certain life events, like getting married, having a baby, or losing other coverage.
