A $20,000 reward was offered Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Compton City Council for help in solving the killing of a California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) student.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said 19-year-old Vicente Castillo was fatally shot in his car on December 23, 2014 at 1:20AM near the intersection of White Avenue and Rose Street in Compton.

Castillo stopped his car adjacent to a vehicle he believed was being driven by a friend, authorities said.

The driver of the black four-door vehicle exited, approached Castillo and shot him.

Castillo was struck in the upper body and transported to Saint Francis Medical Center in Lynwood where he died of his injuries hours later, according to officials. They said the incident was unprovoked.

“My brother was a good person,” Wilmer Medina told reporters at a news conference at sheriff’s headquarters in Monterey Park. “He didn’t deserve…this. He had a good mind, a good personality, no bad habits.”

Castillo was a full-time student at CSULB and was supposed to begin playing with a developmental soccer team in Barcelona, Spain—which is associated with the Galaxy professional soccer team, authorities said.
