A man who allegedly stole items from a vehicle immediately after it was involved in a crash near Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) on Tuesday was also found in possession of several tools consistent with bike thefts, university police reported.

Story continued below.

The man, identified as David Johnson, and two other persons also not affiliated with the campus were found with the tools by CSULB Police Department officers investigating the collision and subsequent theft.

According to officials, university police initially responded to a traffic collision at the intersection of Atherton Street and Chatwin Avenue—just north of CSULB—at about 8:30AM on Tuesday, April 5.

Just before police arrived, witnesses reported seeing Johnson run up to one of the vehicles involved in the crash, remove property from inside and then run from the scene.

Johnson, Brandon Michaels and Niesha Cabayan “were contacted in the area soon after and found in possession of several tools consistent with bike thefts,” officials stated. “The victim of the initial theft related to the collision declined to press charges.”

Officers took a report related to the collision, according to the crime bulletin.
