PREVIOUSLY: Suspect in Recent Port Killing Shot, Critically Wounded by Long Beach Police
10/7/16 at 3:13PM | A murder suspect was shot and critically wounded in Wilmington Friday by Long Beach detectives investigating the killing of a 21-year-old San Pedro man, who was found dead at the Port of Long Beach (POLB) in September.
The officer-involved shooting happened at about 11:20AM on the 1700 block of Marine Avenue in Wilmington, while detectives were conducting a follow-up investigation into the September 5 killing of Armando Amayo, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson said.
Detectives were trying to arrest the suspect—who was considered “armed and dangerous”—during the investigation, Johnson said.
“Upon [police] contacting the suspect, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” he said.
No officers were injured, but the suspect was hit by gunfire and subsequently transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) personnel. He is listed in critical condition.
A gun was recovered at the scene.
Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation at the location of the incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct an independent investigation as they do in all officer-involved shootings that result in injury, authorities said.
