A man was shot to death while sitting in his car in Long Beach’s Washington neighborhood Thursday night, police said.

Few details were immediately available about what led up to the shooting. Police said they believe an unknown suspect approached the victim and shot him around 10:40 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim in his vehicle on Cedar Avenue near 15th Street. He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body, according to police. Fire personnel determined he was dead.

Authorities identified the victim as Rafael Araiza, a 22-year-old Long Beach resident.

Homicide detectives canvassed the scene for witnesses and evidence but the motive for the shooting is not yet known, police said.

The case is currently being investigated as gang-related, according to police. Long Beach police define “gang-related” crime as any crime “committed for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with any criminal street gang.”
