An 82-year-old woman was killed and two other people were seriously hurt in a three-car, chain-reaction crash on the westbound 91 Freeway in Long Beach late Monday night, authorities said.

The trouble started just before midnight when a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck started to run out of gas near Atlantic Avenue, according to Sgt. Armando Perdomo. When the truck’s driver slowed down to about 15 to 20 mph and tried to pull over to the right shoulder, a Honda Civic driven by the elderly woman hit the truck, authorities said.

After hitting the rear of the truck, the Civic veered left across all the westbound lanes and ended up facing sideways in the far-left lane, officials said in a news release.

“Moments after this first collision, the Honda Civic was struck broadside by a Toyota Highlander SUV,” driven by a 29-year-old man from San Pedro, the release said.

The elderly woman died from the injuries she sustained in the crash, Perdomo said. Authorities haven’t yet released her name.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 41-year-old from Compton, also had major head injuries, the CHP said. Authorities said he fled the scene of the crash on foot but was later found at his home and taken to a hospital.

The driver of the SUV had moderate injuries, Perdomo said. There were no passengers in any of the cars.

Crews shut down all westbound lanes of the 91 Freeway while they investigated and cleared away the debris. All lanes reopened before 5 a.m., according to Perdomo.

Nobody has been arrested in connection with the crash, and investigators don’t suspect drugs or alcohol played a part in the wreck.

“We just suspect it’s a horrible collision,” Perdomo said.
