Authorities today identified a motorist who died when his car slammed into a traffic light post in Long Beach while he was speeding away from the scene of a non-injury hit-and-run crash.

The fatal crash occurred about 1:20 a.m. Sunday near Second Street and Marina Drive.

Jose Antunez, 25, died at a hospital, the coroner’s office reported. His home town was not known.

According to Long Beach police, Antunez was fatally injured while driving a 2004 Toyota Camry at a high rate of speed away from the scene of a crash that had just occurred near Second Street and Granada Avenue, which is about a mile and a half from the scene of the fatal crash.

Witnesses pulled Antunez from the wreckage of the car after it caught fire.
