Three suspected robbers have been arrested for allegedly holding up a 7-Eleven convenience store near Cal State Long Beach and then crashing their getaway car on campus earlier this month, police announced today.

Police said they caught the trio at least partly because one of the suspects, 21-year old Adrian Martinez of Compton, later tried to report his car had been stolen, Long Beach police said.

“It was later determined that this subject was involved in the robbery and subsequently arrested,” police said in a news release.

Detectives also identified two other suspects involved in the robbery, police said. They arrested a 16-year-old boy in Compton on Feb. 19 and 19-year-old Alexander Gomez in Downey two days later.

The suspects allegedly held up the 7-Eleven using a short-barreled shotgun and a knife shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 9, Capt. Rick Goodwin of the University Police Department said the day after the crime. The store reported about $200 was stolen, he said.

The robbers fled on foot after crashing their car into some campus newspaper stands and UPD later impounded the vehicle, according to authorities.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office has charged Martinez with one count of robbery and Gomez with one count of robbery with a gun enhancement, police said. They are both being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to authorities.

The identity of juvenile suspects and the proceedings against them are generally confidential.
