A Cerritos man who stole a car and lead police on a chase which resulted in the death of a passenger in Long Beach last November, pleaded no contest today.

Nolan Campbell, 37, was sentenced to nine years in state prison today on one felony count each of vehicular manslaughter and unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office (LADA) said in a statement.

According to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department in November 2013, officers located a stolen vehicle traveling in the area of 20th Street and Pacific Avenue on Nov. 24, 2013.

Officers tried to conduct a traffic enforcement stop, but the driver, later identified as Campbell, failed to yield and led police in a pursuit.

During the pursuit, Campbell drove the vehicle above 80 miles per hour westbound on Pacific Coast Highway toward the 103 (Terminal Island) Freeway and attempted to turn southbound onto the freeway, police said.

Due to Campbell’s high rate of speed, the car hit a median and traveled over the embankment and flipped several times, ejecting both Campbell and a passenger, identified as Ra Thongphun, 30.

Thongphun sustained massive head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

After the accident, Campbell attempted to flee the area but was apprehended by police. He was transported to a local hospital with injuries that appeared to be non life-threatening.

Police originally investigated the incident as possibly drug-related, but the prosecutor did not say whether or not Campbell was under the influence at the time of the incident, said Sarah Ardalani, spokeswoman for the LADA.

The vehicle, a 2003 black GMC Sierra pick-up truck, had been reported stolen in Long Beach earlier that day.
