UPDATE | Authorities today identified a man fatally injured during a possible gang-related shooting Thursday afternoon that led SWAT police to surround a home considered “of interest.”
The victim was identified as 24-year-old Joseph Patton Jr. of Torrance.
An investigation by police found that the shooting happened in the 900 block of Dayman Street and that Patton Jr. then drove himself a few blocks north to the 1900 block of Myrtle Avenue where he ended up crashing into a parked vehicle.
Arriving officers, who were dispatched at 2:30PM to Myrtle Avenue, found Patton Jr. inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. He was transported by Long Beach paramedics to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to a release from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
Authorities said that further investigation led officers to a residence on Dayman Street “as a possible location of interest.”
“Officers surrounded the location and made attempts to call anyone who was inside to exit but there was no response,” the release stated. “The Long Beach PD SWAT Team was then activated, and the incident was handled as a possible barricade situation.”
SWAT eventually deployed tear gas inside the home, resulting in the exit of a woman shortly after. No other occupants were found in the house. Police detained the woman who was then interviewed by detectives and released, officials stated.
The incident is being investigated as possibly gang-related.

8/17/17 at 5:33PM | SWAT officers were called to a barricade situation at a Long Beach home late Thursday afternoon following an initial police response to an injury shooting, according to authorities.
The incident began when police were dispatched at 2:30PM to the 1900 block of Myrtle Avenue, a few blocks north of Poly High School, regarding a shooting that had just occurred.
Arriving officers found a man in a vehicle with a gunshot wound.
“Officers determined the shooting occurred in the 900 block of Dayman Street and the victim drove to the 1900 block of Myrtle Avenue where he crashed into a parked vehicle,” Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) Sgt. Brad Johnson said.
The victim was transported by Long Beach paramedics to a local hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.
Johnson said that further investigation led officers to a residence in the 900 block of Dayman Street that “is of interest,” resulting in officers surrounding the location.
After failed attempts to call out anyone inside, SWAT was then activated, resulting in the incident being handled as a “possible barricaded suspect situation,” according to Johnson.
Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue is closed in both directions between Pacific Coast Highway and 20th Street.
The incident is still a fluid situation, he added.
