A 19-year-old alleged gang member and resident of Long Beach has been charged with the June 16 killing of a man and injuring of another at a gas station in Redondo Beach, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Erik Martinez officially faces one count of murder and attempted murder, amid allegations that he used a handgun and committed the crimes in association with a street gang, according to Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Turk.

The suit states Martinez fatally shot 19-year-old Mike Cortez of Lawndale in the head and back at a gas station at Inglewood and Marine avenues, before allegedly shooting another man in the stomach last month. The man shot in the stomach survived, according to the prosecutor.

Martinez faces a maximum penalty of 50 years to life in state prison, if guilty as charged. Bail is set at more than $3 million.

The case remains under investigation by the Redondo Beach Police Department.
