A Long Beach man was arrested in Garden Grove Saturday afternoon for his alleged involvement in the theft of a BMW from Huntington Beach, authorities said.

Officials said 21-year-old Johnny Hackett of Long Beach was arrested for unauthorized possession of found property after police located the stolen 2014 four-door black BMW 328 in a Garden Grove apartment complex parking lot.

Officers tracked the stolen vehicle on Saturday, October 17, via GPS to the apartment complex at 8800 Garden Grove Boulevard where they discovered paper plates replacing the BMW’s license plates.

Officers also arrested Westminster resident Richard Negrete, 28, after finding him removing items from the trunk of the stolen car, according to Garden Grove police Sgt. Phil Schmidt.

Negrete was arrested at the car without incident and booked on possession of stolen property—a vehicle—and unauthorized possession of found property, officials said.

Both men were sent to Orange County Jail, according to Schmidt.

The case against the two suspects was being sent to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
