A Long Beach man was charged with attempted murder and assault Wednesday after allegedly assaulting and critically injuring another man during a dispute, authorities said.

Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers responded to a battery call at about 4:50PM on Sunday, June 21, at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Ohio Avenue, according to officials.

Arriving officers discovered a 39-year-old Long Beach man with blunt force injuries to the upper body and transported him to a local hospital. He remains in critical condition.

The suspect—57-year-old Riccardo Rangel—remained at the scene and was arrested shortly after the incident.

Both men knew each other and were involved in a dispute before it escalated into the assault, officials said. Neither of them lived at the location.

Homicide detectives became involved in the investigation due to the severity of the victim’s injuries, authorities said.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office filed one count of attempted murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon against Rangel.

He is being held on $1,030,000 bail at Men’s Central Jail.

His next court appearance is on July 9.
