A man was arrested early Saturday morning after hitting an officer in the head with a handgun and then hiding in a Long Beach home during a police standoff, authorities said.

Patrol officers originally witnessed the man inside Houghton Park during closing hours at 1:47AM on Saturday, August 6, according to Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.

During their contact with the suspect a fight broke out and the suspect struck the officer in the head with a handgun, Arrona said.

The armed suspect then fled to a nearby residence on the 700 block of Harding Street, across the street from the park. The residents of the home came out but the suspect failed to comply, she said.

Police called for a SWAT team at about 2:30AM and as a precautionary measure evacuated nearby residents.

SWAT police searched and found the suspect on the property and eventually took him into custody.

The suspect faces charges of assault on a police officer, according to Arrona.

“The injured officer sustained superficial wounds to the face and was treated at the scene by [Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) personnel],” Arrona stated.

The street was opened to residents at about 7:40AM. The investigation remains ongoing.
