Maria MendozaUPDATE | The victim of a recent hit-and-run incident in Long Beach has died from her injuries, according to the Long Beach Police Department. 

Authorities announced yesterday that 59-year-old Compton resident Maria Mendoza died at a local hospital on Saturday, September 17 from injuries she sustained when a motorist struck her as she walked on a crosswalk at Willow Street and Long Beach Boulevard on Saturday, September 10. 

Based on surveillance footage, officials believe the driver of a small SUV failed to stop at a red light while moving westward on Wiillow Street at Long Beach Boulevard, striking the pedestrian while she crossed southbound Long Beach Boulevard west of Willow Street.

Police later identified and arrested the driver, identified 83-year-old Edward Peterson of Long Beach, and booked him for felony hit-and-run. Officials have not announced new charges following the victim’s death.

9/15/16 at 4:25PM | Long Beach police have arrested the man suspected of hitting and critically injuring Maria Mendoza at Willow Street and Long Beach Boulevard Saturday, thanks to a tip from the public, they announced today.

According to a release issued this afternoon, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) arrested 83-year-old Edward Peterson at his Long Beach residence at 11:00AM today. He was booked into the Long Beach jail for felony hit and run, with bail set at $50,000, stated the release.

Peterson’s vehicle was located at his place of residence and impounded as evidence.

The investigation remains ongoing.

PREVIOUSLY: Long Beach Police Seek Public’s Help Regarding Recent Hit and Run Investigation

09/13/16 at 5:45PM | The Long Beach Police Department is requesting the public’s help in discovering more information related to a hit and run incident that occurred last Saturday in Long Beach and resulted in the critical injury of a pedestrian, they announced today.

According to a release issued today, the hit and run incident injured a pedestrian identified as Maria Mendoza, 59, of Compton. She was hospitalized and remains in critical condition.16-57818 suspect vehicle

The release stated that officers were dispatched to Willow Street and Long Beach Boulevard on Saturday, September 10 at around 6:14PM regarding an injury hit and run traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the pedestrian—Mendoza—lying unconscious on Willow Street, being treated by Good Samaritans on-site. She was transported by the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) to a local hospital, where she was listed in “Very Critical Condition.”

The initial investigation found that a beige-colored, small SUV struck Mendoza on the crosswalk. A video from surveillance cameras in the area showed that the vehicle was possibly a Toyota Rav-4 with no cover on a spare tire. The video suggested the vehicle failed to stop at a red light while moving westward on Wiillow Street at Long Beach Boulevard, striking the pedestrian while she crossed southbound Long Beach Boulevard west of Willow Street.

Witnesses said the driver was an elderly white male with gray hair.
