A 29-year-old appeared in court Thursday to face charges he murdered a homeless man in an industrial area of Long Beach earlier this week.

Authorities allege Carlos Gustavo Ohm shot the man to death at a small homeless encampment on the corner of 17th Street and Daisy Avenue around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 19. Ohm is also charged with two counts of making criminal threats.

He did not enter a plea to the charges Thursday. His arraignment was postponed until July 2, according to court records.

Authorities identified the homeless man as Felipe Solorio-Nava, 38.

A woman in a shelter made out of tarps at the corner of Daisy and 17th said Solorio-Nava had been living in a van at the intersection for a while but she didn’t know much else about him.

On Wednesday, there was a makeshift memorial of candles and messages written on a board sitting next to the wall of an industrial building at that corner. A few feet away, evidence markers on the wall showed where bullets had pocked the bricks.

Police said they found Solorio-Nava shot multiple times on the sidewalk where he died. They haven’t released any information about motive, but they do not believe the shooting was gang-related.

Detectives arrested Ohm later that morning a few blocks away, according to authorities.
