A man was shot and killed just after midnight Sunday after a fight in front of a Bellflower home where a party was being held, Los Angeles Sheriff’s investigators said.

The fight occurred at 12:35 a.m. on the 17100 block of Downey Avenue, according to Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

The victim, a 25-year-old Hispanic man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

When police arrived they found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot to his upper torso and discovered a party at that location, authorities said.

“Investigators learned that there was an altercation between several individuals in front of the residence prior to the shooting,” said Deputy Trina Schrader.

Soon after the shooting was reported, Lakewood Sheriff’s deputies asked the California Highway Patrol to shut down the Downey Avenue offramp on the westbound 91 Freeway during the investigation. A SigAlert was issued at 1:31 a.m. for unknown duration.

The gunman was described as a male Hispanic who was last seen wearing a gray or silver hoodie in an area just north of the 91 Freeway between Downey Avenue and Lakewood Boulevard, CHP officials said.

Police do not know at this time if the incident is gang-related.
