Authorities were looking for an “armed and dangerous” man suspected of firing gunshots in a Norwalk neighborhood, sparking an hours-long standoff with authorities.

The incident began around 1:45 a.m. when neighbors called the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to report shots fired in the 13300 block of Rosecrans Avenue, Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. No injuries were reported.

A sheriff’s helicopter quickly spotted a car matching the description of a car connected to the shooting and followed it to the 14500 block of Claressa Avenue where a man got out and went into a garage or back house, according to authorities. Deputies searched the car and found a loaded gun, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The sheriff’s SWAT team responded to the scene as did deputies from the Norwalk, Industry, Pico Rivera, Lakewood and Compton stations, Koerner said.

But around 8:50 a.m., the SWAT team searched the property and discovered the man was gone. Authorities, however, said they know who he is.

“The suspect … has been positively identified and is considered armed and dangerous,” a sheriff’s statement said. “The neighborhood has returned to normal operations.”
