A suspicious device found at a Belmont Shore residence early Friday morning led police to shut down nearby roads for several hours until the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s (LASD) Hazardous Material unit determined it non-explosive, authorities said.

Long Beach narcotics detectives were serving a search warrant at a house on the 200 block of Prospect Avenue at 5:55AM today when they encountered a suspicious device inside, according to Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson.

A patrol sergeant and officers were dispatched and assisted by setting up a perimeter around the location and conducting evacuations, he said.

Officers closed streets between 3rd and Vista streets and Quincy and Ximeno avenues.

The LASD bomb squad requested to the scene determined the device was not explosive but “contained an unknown powdery substance,” officials said.

The LASD Hazardous Materials unit was then called and determined the substance to be non-explosive and the material was turned over to the Long Beach Health Department, Johnson said.

The scene was cleared by 12:35PM. The investigation remains ongoing.
