UPDATE | Charges have yet to be filed against a Long Beach mother suspected of abandoning her newborn son in South Los Angeles last week, with prosecutors citing the need for more investigation by Los Angeles police, according to a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Belen Ramirez, 20, was arrested by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southwest station at 12:30AM on Saturday, August 8, said LAPD spokesman Mike Lopez.

She should have been released from custody now, said LADA spokesman Ricardo Santiago.

There is no time frame for police to present more information to the district attorney’s office, he added.

8/10/2015 at 2:30PM | Los Angeles police arrested a Long Beach woman on Saturday who is suspected of abandoning her newborn son near a church in South Los Angeles last week.

Belen Ramirez, 20, was arrested by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southwest station at 12:30AM on Saturday, August 8, said LAPD spokesman Mike Lopez.

Ramirez was booked on child endangerment charges shortly thereafter and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, Lopez said.

Officials said police were sent to Vermont Avenue and Dana Street in Los Angeles just before 1:00PM on Tuesday, August 4, on a call from a witness. Paramedics then took the baby boy to a hospital where he was reported in good condition, LAPD Officer Drake Madison said.

According to media reports, residents had seen what they thought was an abandoned stroller at the same location on Monday night.

The county currently has a “Safe Surrender” law, which was enacted in 2001, that allows a parent or guardian to surrender an infant who is no more than three days old without repercussions, as long as the baby shows no sign of abuse.
