According to preliminary statistics released by the Long Beach Police Department, enforcement efforts within the city resulted in the arrests of 33 people this New Year’s Eve and early New Year’s Day, 18 of them for alcohol-related crimes such as DUI and public intoxication.
Between 7PM on December 31, 2013 and 3AM on Janurary 1, 2014, LBPD officials say the Department also arrested nine people on suspicion of committing a felony and six for suspicion of committing a misdemanor. 36 traffic citations were issued citywide during the same period and 13 misdemeanor citations were recorded.
Despite celebrations going on citywide and more than 10,000 revelers who came to Downtown Long Beach to ring in the new year, the number of arrests and citations in Long Beach were small compared to what the California Highway Patrol reported on their turf during a similar time period. From 6:01PM Tuesday through 6AM Wednesday, the CHP arrested 76 people in Los Angeles County, a reduction from last year when CHP officers arrested 86 people.
Additionally, though LBPD patrol units responded to numerous shots-fired calls on New Year’s Eve, no shootings against persons were reported.
