The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors offered a $10,000 reward Tuesday in the hope of tracking down the killer of a 51-year-old man stabbed to death in Long Beach’s Cal Heights neighborhood this summer.

David Gross was crossing Orange Avenue just north of Wardlow Road around 9:30 p.m. on July 11 when a white Mazda 3 hatchback struck him, breaking the car’s passenger-side mirror, according to police.

Long Beach police have released video footage of a car that hit a pedestrian before the driver got out and stabbed the man to death in California Heights, according to authorities. Police said they need help finding the white Mazda 3 hatchback that hit the victim on Orange Avenue just north of Wardlow Road. Police said the car is a recent model between 2011 and 2014. It was missing a bumper before the crash, and it may have damage to its passenger-side mirror from the impact.

The driver stopped the car, got out and began arguing with Gross before stabbing him, police said.

In August, police released security camera footage of the car and asked for help finding it and the driver.

Gross lived just a few dozen yards from where the attack happened, according to neighbors. He was a friendly man who mostly kept to himself, according to people in the neighborhood.

Hahn urged anyone with more information to call Long Beach Det. Donald Collier at 562-570-5740.
