Long Beach police say they arrested a man responsible for a Sunday-night shooting after they found a gun in his car and started to tow it away.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. on E. 23rd Street near Olive Avenue, according to police.

“When officers arrived on scene, a resident pointed to a vehicle and officers saw that the vehicle had been struck with multiple bullet rounds,” Officer Alvino Herrera said. “Officers also located multiple bullet casings near the vehicle.”

They also spotted a man in a car driving away from the area, police said. Later, they found the same car parked on Cherry Avenue near 10th Street, according to Herrera.

Officers spotted a handgun inside the car and as they were towing it away to keep investigating, the man who’d been driving the car earlier came out of a nearby home and said it was his vehicle, Herrera said.

Police said he is Raymond Walker, a 21-year-old Long Beach resident. He was arrested on suspicion of shooting at an unoccupied vehicle, carrying a loaded firearm and carrying a concealed weapon, police said. He was booked into jail in lieu of $35,000 bail, according to the department.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the gunman opened fire on the empty car.

Police asked anyone with information to contact detectives at 562-570-7370.
