Authorities detained but didn’t arrest a Millikan High School student who brought a toy handgun to the campus on Thursday, according to police.

Police said the student showed the toy gun to a classmate around 1 p.m., and when another student saw this, he or she thought it was a real gun and immediately reported it to school staff.

After detaining the student with the toy gun, officers quickly discovered it was made out of LEGOs, according to a statement from Millikan’s co-principals.

“While students remained safe the entire time, per California Education Code students may be suspended or expelled from school if they possess imitation firearms,” according to the statement, which stopped short of revealing whether that’s what happened in this case.

“We thank the students and staff who helped us to resolve this incident in a safe manner, and we assure you that safety remains our top priority at Millikan,” the statement said.
