Two Long Beach teens were arrested Thursday in connection to a stabbing earlier that day in the city’s South Wrigley neighborhood, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Jose Maldonado, 19, was booked on one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon and is being held on $30,000 bail.

Jesus Mercado Jr., 19, was booked on one count of misdemeanor battery and is being held on $750 bail.

Officials said police responded to a stabbing call near Pacific Avenue and 21st Street at 10:59AM on Thursday, February 11. Arriving officers found a man with multiple stab wounds to his upper torso, LBPD spokesman Brad Johnson said.

The victim was transported by Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) paramedics to a local hospital, where he was rushed into surgery, Johnson added.

Officers contacted witnesses and canvassed the area in search of possible suspects. Authorities eventually detained and arrested Maldonado and Mercado after being positively identified, he said.

It is unknown whether the incident is gang-related. The investigation remains ongoing.
