A woman was hospitalized after she was stabbed in the eye near Pacific Coast Highways and Pacific Avenue early Monday morning, police say.

The stabbing with a knife occurred at around 1:50AM, said Sgt. Megan Zabel of the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

“The suspect, described as a man in his 50s, was taken into custody at Wardlow Road and Pacific Avenue at 2AM,” Zabel said.

The suspect, identified as John Keith Callegari, was booked on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon and assault with a deadly weapon. He was being held on $35,000 bail, said LBPD spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.

The victim, who is in her 40s, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“The motive for the assault was unknown, but the man and woman were acquainted,” Arrona said.
