The Long Beach Public Library system is joining thousands of libraries across the country in promoting its services as part of Library Card Sign-Up Month throughout September.
“As an educator, I believe in the power of knowledge and learning,” said Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement. “Libraries help make opportunities to learn accessible throughout Long Beach. Though free, a library card has tremendous value because it helps both children and adults achieve academic and personal success.”
To help promote sign-ups the American Library Association and participating libraries have named Snoopy, from the Peanuts comic strip, as this year’s honorary chair, according to a press release.
Those who sign up with the LBPL will be able to check out books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks.
Patrons will also have access to Wi-Fi service, be able to receive help with their homework and have 24/7 access to the library’s educational, business and marketing databases as well as access to practice tests for the GED, SAT and GRE.
“I believe a library card belongs in the hand of every child going back to school — just like pencils and notebook paper,” said Glenda Williams, Director of Library Services. “Likewise, no adult wallet is complete without a library card. Make sure that you, your family, friends, and neighbors visit any of our 12 Long Beach Public Libraries to get a library card.”
The Main Library is located at 101 Pacific Avenue at Ocean Boulevard. For more information on this and other Long Beach Public Library services, visit your local library, call 562.570.7500, or go to www.lbpl.org.
