UPDATE | On Thursday, authorities identified the motorist who was killed late Wednesday morning, when the BMW he was driving collided with a tree in Long Beach.

The driver and sole occupant of a 2007 BMW 530i collided with a tree and unoccupied parked vehicle near East Willow Street and Nipomo Avenue AT 10:50AM, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said Long Beach resident Mario Sistos, 48, died at the scene.

12/2/15 | Long Beach police have completed their investigation of a deadly vehicle collision near El Dorado Park that left one man dead late Wednesday morning, authorities said. 

The 48-year-old Long Beach man was the driver and sole occupant of a 2007 BMW 530i that collided with a tree and unoccupied parked vehicle near East Willow Street and Nipomo Avenue, according to officials. 

According to a preliminary investigation the man was driving normally eastbound on Willow Street when witnesses said they saw the vehicle suddenly accelerate at a high rate of speed and cross over the raised media just east of Josie Avenue, officials stated.

“The vehicle continued east and traveled a short distance, eastbound in the westbound lanes, until it went over the north curb of the Willow Street median separating the service road on the north side. Once on the median, the vehicle collided with a medium sized tree, uprooting it, and went on to collide into a utility truck,” according to a statement.

Officers were dispatched at 10:50AM to the location where Long Beach Fire personnel determined the driver dead at the scene, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokeswoman Marlene Arrona said.

Arriving paramedics removed the seemingly unconscious driver from the vehicle, performed CPR, and pronounced him dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Coroner will determine the official cause of death.

During the hours-long investigation Willow Street in both directions, between Palo Verde Avenue and Studebaker Road, were closed.

12/2/15 at 1:17PM | Long Beach police are investigating a deadly vehicle collision near El Dorado Park that left one man dead late Wednesday morning, authorities said. The roads in the area, on Willow Street in both directions between Palo Verde Avenue and Studebaker Road, are closed and authorities said it is unknown when they will reopen.

Officers were dispatched at 10:50AM to East Willow Street and Nipomo Avenue regarding a vehicle-versus-tree collision, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Long Beach Fire personnel determined the unidentified driver was dead at the scene, LBPD spokeswoman Marlene Arrona said.

There were no other occupants in the vehicle, which was described only as a BMW by Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) spokesman Jake Heflin. 

LBPD detectives were on scene Wednesday afternoon to investigate the collision, she added.

Authorities recommend using Spring or Stearns streets instead of Willow Street. It is unknown how long the closure will last.

No additional information was available at this time. The Post will update this story as we learn more.
