1:12pm | Happy Earth Day! All across the country, people are taking time out to do their part for the environment. This week, there have been plenty of events going on in Long Beach and there are many more to come.

“The City of Long Beach has a rich history of sustainability that obviously benefits the environment, but just as often save taxpayers’ money,” Mayor Bob Foster said in a press release this week. “Quite simply, this is the right way for all of us to do businesses, every day of the year.”

Several 55-gallon barrels were installed at the North Neighborhood Library to catch falling rainwater and create a more sustainable water supply. About 100 of the barrels are being sent out to residents that requested them, and the City is hoping to get more to expand the program.

Drought Resistant Yards
Of course, one way that many Long Beach residents have chosen to do their part is to install a drought-resistant landscape in their yard at doesn’t feature much grass and so requires much less water to maintain. The Long Beach Water Department is offering rebates of up to $2,500 for residents interested in converting their lawns. Visit lblawntogarden.com for more information.
