Long Beach officials will mark the opening Wednesday of a new playground at Whaley Park in East Long Beach.

The playground, funded by Measure A sales tax funds, includes two new structures: one for kids age 2 to 5 and the other for kids age 5 to 12. The new playground was designed with an arts and sciences theme to complement programming at Whaley Park community center, officials said in a statement.

The playground cost $910,000. It is the fourth playground to be funded by Measure A; the city is planning to construct or update two more.

The event Wednesday will include an adventure course and the Long Beach Symphony Instrument Petting Zoo. Children will have the opportunity to create sounds with various instruments.

Wednesday’s event is at 3:30 p.m. at Whaley Park, 5620 Atherton St. For information, call (562) 570-3150.
