Long Beach Affordable Housing Coalition Awards $25K in Scholarships to College-Bound Students

The Long Beach Affordable Housing Coalition (LBAHC) has awarded $25,000 in scholarships to Long Beach college-bound students, the nonprofit announced Monday.

2015 marks the third year the LBAHC has provided scholarship assistance to Long Beach students, where qualifying students must be at least 16 years of age and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

“We are fully committed to continually investing in the education of our community, and to building a strong legacy of scholarship recipients,” LBAHC Executive Director Jonathan Newsom said in a statement. “We are pleased to help residents with their educational aspirations in fields including Early Childhood Education, Forensic Science, Sociology, Aerospace, Engineering, Computer Engineering, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Nursing and other majors at established universities and local colleges alike.”

According to a release issued Monday morning, scholarship recipients will go on to attend such schools as: California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), California State University, Fresno, the University of California, Merced, Humboldt State University, National University, Santa Fe University, University of California, Irvine and other local undergraduate institutions.

The 2015 scholarship recipients include Nancy Cordon, Jonathan Davis, Ryhon Mack, Carlos Galvez, Morris Galvez, Arely Navarro, Stefan Mitchell, Lilibeth Quinteros, Kimberly Veliz and Stephanie Veliz.

The release said each student received a scholarship ranging from $1,500 to $2,500.

The first year of the program offered $10,500 in scholarship funding total to seven participants, while the second year of the program, 2013, offered $11,500 total. Last year's scholarship total was $15,000, distributed among 10 recipients.

Past scholarship recipients have advanced to attend such schools as Biola University, California State Polytechnic University, CSULB and Long Beach City College, to name a few.
