High school seniors within the Long Beach Unified School District who are interested in pursuing a career in public education are encouraged to apply for The Larry Acterman Public Education Award (LAPEA).

The award offers $1,000-$2,000  to help one student accomplish their dream of becoming a public school teacher in California. It is unclear how many scholarships are available.

The LAPEA is a permanently-endowed fund at the Orange County Community Foundation which was created by Steve and Amy Acterman to ensure their father’s 33 years of commitment to public education in Long Beach continues with the next generation of teachers.

Seniors that are interested in applying must complete an online application form, write a brief essay on the topic of public education and provide a copy of their official high school transcript, by April 15th.
