A female bicyclist was fatally hit by a stolen car in North Long Beach early Saturday morning that was later found abandoned a few blocks away, authorities said.

The woman was bicycling eastbound at little after 1:00AM on Market Street in the center median along with her male friend, who was riding eastbound on Market Street on the north side of the street, according to a release from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Officials said she was then hit from behind by a 2013 white Kia Optima that was traveling eastbound on Market Street at a high rate of speed and illegally passing a vehicle on the left in the center median.

The Kia was reported stolen, taken in carjacking in Long Beach, on July 8 near Pacific Coast Highway and Pine Avenue, officials stated.

“The White Kia never stopped and was last seen traveling eastbound Market Street at a high rate of speed, with four occupants,” the release stated.

Officers responded to the incident at 1:20AM on the 400 block of East Market Street and discovered the woman lying unconscious in the eastbound lanes of Market Street. Long Beach paramedics transported her to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to the release.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in a parking lot a few blocks away, near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and East 53rd Street, with “major front end damage and a smashed windshield.”

The county coroner’s office will release the victim’s name pending notification of kin.
