The Board of Harbor Commissioners on Monday, November 19 appointed Alex H. Cherin, Long Beach’s Assistant City Auditor, as the new Executive Officer to the Board at the Port of Long Beach.

Cherin has served as Assistant City Auditor since May, 2006 when he was appointed by City Auditor Laura L. Doud. Prior to that, Cherin specialized in international trade and maritime law issues as an attorney for the Long Beach firm Flynn, Delich & Wise.

“From a very talented and impressive set of applicants, Alex emerged as our top choice,” said Harbor Commission President Mario Cordero, who led the interview panel.

The Executive Officer is one of only two staff positions at the Port that report directly to the Board of Harbor Commissioners. The other is Executive Director Richard D. Steinke.

The Executive Officer coordinates all administrative and communications functions for the Board, serves as a personal advisor on general issues, makes recommendations on public policy issues and coordinates trade missions and conferences, among other duties. The Executive Officer also ensures that all necessary legal requirements are followed in the execution of the Board’s orders.

Cherin serves as Judge Pro Tem for the Los Angeles County Superior Court and has sat on the Board of Governors for the Long Beach Bar Association and Bar Foundation. In 2004, he was appointed to the City of Long Beach Economic Development Commission by then-Mayor Beverly O’Neill, where he advised the commission and City on matters relating to international trade and commerce.

A graduate of Leadership Long Beach, Cherin has also served as a board member for the Downtown-Buffum YMCA, the State Bar VIP Program, Children Today, US Vets and Dramatic Results.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Michigan and a law degree from Loyola Law School.
