Food trucks, live music and drum circles doesn’t quite sound like the setup at your average health festival. But that’s exactly what Arts & Services for Disabled and Community Hospital Long Beach (CHLB) had in mind when they teamed up to plan the 2nd Annual Stomp on the Roof Festival on Saturday, May 3.

Named after its venue, the Community Hospital Long Beach parking structure rooftop, Stomp on the Roof will welcome more than 30 local organizations providing mental health resources, support for intellectual and developmental disabilities, older adult resources and other health and wellness support services.

“Stomp on the Roof promotes healthy lifestyles by sharing the vast mental and developmental health services offered in our community,” says Helen Dolas, founder/CEO, Arts & Services for Disabled, and music therapist. “Health and wellness is central to the mission of Arts & Services for Disabled and the reason why we are excited about bringing so many people together.”

One in four adult’s live with a serious mental health illness and nearly three quarters of all mental health disorders begin before age 24. Unfortunately, about 60 percent of adults and nearly half of children with mental health disorders don’t receive the treatment they need, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health.

With help, most people with mental health disorders can get better. Stomp on the Roof hopes to connect people in the community with the resources they need. The festival is free and many of the organizations attending provide their services for little to no cost.

“Stomp on the Roof is just another way for us to serve our community,” says Krikor Jansezian, Ph.D., administrator, Community Hospital Long Beach. “On top of the programs we provide, we want to give the people of Long Beach an opportunity to connect with other families and gain the resources they need to keep their family healthy.”

A wellness walk around the hospital campus will kick-off the festival. Music therapists from both Arts & Services for Disabled and CHLB will facilitate music workshops and drum circles throughout the day.

Research has shown that drumming used in a therapeutic setting can help adults and children, improve their social capabilities, communications skills, fine and gross motor skills, emotional needs and cognitive skills.

The first 1,000 attendees will receive a free commemorative drum courtesy of REMO. Art workshops will give attendees the chance to express themselves by customizing and decorating their drum head.

Stomp on the Roof is on Saturday, May 3 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on the roof of the parking structure at Community Hospital Long Beach located at 1720 Termino Ave., Long Beach, 90802. Registration for the wellness walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. For more information, call (562) 982-0247 or visit MemorialCare.org/Stomp.
