The Long Beach Health Department confirmed Long Beach’s first influenza case this week, officially ushering in an early flu season.

With assistance from the American Red Cross, the Health Department’s 2013 Annual Flu Clinics will now begin Oct. 10, providing free vaccinations at eight citywide locations.

“Everyone age six-months and older should get the flu vaccine each year, especially those with a health condition that may increase their risk of serious complications from the flu,” said Dr. Mitchell Kushner, Long Beach City Health Officer, in a statement.

People ages 60 and older, pregnant women and caregivers are especially encouraged to get their flu shots as they are at high risk of infectio.

Some children may require two doses of the vaccine spread between two months.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also confirmed its string of influenza A H1N1 Sept. 9, according to KNX 1070 reporter Claudia Peschiutta.

Long Beach residents should inquire with their doctor for where and when to get a flu shot. Many private providers have already received flu vaccines to make available for patients. Some neighborhood pharmacies are also providing vaccinations at low fees.

Vaccination appointments at the Health Department’s main facility at 2525 Grand Avenue will be accepted for a small administration fee by calling (562) 570-4315. Adults with Medicare Part B or other insurance should bring their Medicare or insurance card and provide immunization records for their children.

Appointment are not needed for the free Annual Flu Clinics.
