NPFThe National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) is holding its annual Moving Day L.A. event, a fundraising walk for Parkinson’s disease (PD), in Long Beach, the foundation announced Tuesday.

Moving Day will be held at Shoreline Aquatic Park on Saturday, October 24 from 9:00AM to 1:00PM. Funds raised by the community through the event will help improve the lives of PD patients and families affected by the disease.

Studies show that movement is beneficial and proven to help manage the symptoms of PD, improving flexibility and mobility, according to the release. The mission of Moving Day is to encourage people to stay active and move for better health. Each walk will feature a “Movement Pavilion” with activities such as yoga, balance, non-impact boxing, dance and more.

“Moving Day is fun, it’s great exercise and it’s educational,” said Kayln Henkel, NPF Sr. Director of National Signature Events, in a statement. “But mostly, the support of the community enables us to continue to make meaningful changes in the lives of those with Parkinson’s. We believe that ‘People who move change the world.’ ”

Moving Day participants become a part of a nationwide movement to beat PD by supporting PD education and outreach, cutting-edge research aimed at better treatment and care for PD patients, advancement of clinical care through healthcare professional training and raising general awareness about the disease, according to the announcement.

Ron Cooper, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s eight years ago and is participating in this year’s walk, spoke about what the walk means for him.

“I hope Moving Day will bring attention to critical needs of the Parkinson’s community by inspiring our neighbors to become a part of the movement to help improve the lives of those with Parkinson’s and those affected by the disease,” said Cooper.

Moving Day raises awareness of Parkinson’s both nationally and in the Los Angeles County community, while proceeds raised from the campaign go toward supporting local services for people living with the disease and research leading to better treatments.
