Two Long Beach bars temporarily closed last week due to a cockroach infestation and lack of hot water, according to documents from the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services.

El Mar Azul Bar 1, located at 300 West Anaheim Street, was closed after inspectors witnessed six live cockroaches within the facility, and cockroach spotting on facility walls and within cracks. The facility’s health permit was reinstated after the bar hired pest control to target the German roaches, clean the facility, seal cracks and provide preventative actions to mitigate the cockroach issue.

The health inspectors found other issues, including employees at the bar selling food without food permits, obstructions to sinks and use of countertops created with unapproved materials. The bar has until February 18 to comply with all health measures.

The Nugget, located at 468 West Anaheim, was closed February 3 because the maximum temperature of water within its facility could only reach a level of 66 degrees. The bar was allowed to reopen the following day upon re-inspection, with water reaching the mandated 120 degrees, according to the city’s paperwork.

Other code violations included a broken handwash sink with exposed glass, missing hot water knob in the men’s restroom and an unlocked ice machine in the patron area.
