A homeless man was charged Friday with allegedly hitting a 17-year-old playing Pokémon Go in downtown Long Beach, authorities said.

Jayson Louis Lingen, 57, was scheduled to be arraigned at the Long Beach Courthouse Friday afternoon, during which prosecutors planned to ask for bail to be set at $100,000, according to a release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities said officers were dispatched to the 70 block of Aquarium Way, near The Pike Outlets, at 9:50PM on Wednesday, Aug. 17, regarding an assault with a deadly weapon.

Officials determined the 17-year-old victim was playing Pokémon Go when he was hit by the homeless suspect in the head with a bat or metal pipe, according to Sgt. Brad Johnson of the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

“As the teenager was roaming the area, Lingen allegedly yelled at the victim and hit him in the head with a metal pole,” prosecutors stated.

Police were able to find Lingen, arrest him and present the case to the district attorney’s office, which filed one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon.

The suspect faces a maximum possible sentence of 13 years in state prison if convicted as charged.
