Long Beach police are investigating after a gunman opened fire on a group of people a few blocks away from Washington Middle School Monday night. The gunfire started around around 8 p.m. near 15th Street and Daisy Avenue, according to Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Pratt. That's when a gunman approached the group of men or boys and started shooting but apparently missed, she said. Nobody reported being wounded, according to Pratt. The gunman fled on foot before police arrived, she said. Investigators think the shooting may be gang-related, according to Pratt. Police couldn't immediately provide a description of the gunman.

A 22-year-old man was struck by an SUV and killed near Long Beach’s Wrigley neighborhood when he intentionally ran into traffic last week, according to police.

The crash happened around 3:27 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Wardlow Road and Golden Avenue, Long Beach police officer Ben Hearst said.

A 50-year-old woman was headed west on Wardlow when the man ran into traffic in front of her, according to Hearst.

“The driver immediately stopped and rendered aid to the pedestrian while calling 911,” Hearst said.

After speaking with the man’s family, detectives came to the conclusion that the man ran into the street intending to be hit by a car, Hearst said.

Hearst encouraged anyone having suicidal thoughts to call 911.
