A 21-year-old Lakewood man was killed after he was ejected from his truck following a collision near Long Beach City College Monday night, authorities said.
Long Beach police were called to the intersection of Carson Street and Clark Avenue at 11:14PM on Monday, May 23 regarding an injury traffic collision, according to a release from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
Arriving officers found the 21-year-old driver ejected from his truck and with major head trauma and a second driver, a 67-year-old Lakewood man, with major body trauma, the release stated.
Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) personnel responded to the scene and transported both drivers to local hospitals, where the younger driver was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
According to officials, the younger motorist was driving a 1994 GMC pickup southbound on Clark Avenue at a high rate of speed. An independent witness said when the driver failed to stop for a red light at Carson Street, he was struck at the intersection by the older motorist driving a 2006 Hyundai Tucson traveling westbound on Carson Street on a green light, the release stated.
“As a result of the collision, the GMC pickup slid sideways towards the southwest corner of the Carson Street and Clark Avenue, collided with the south curb, a fire hydrant, and then flipped onto its passenger side, ejecting the driver in the process,” the release stated. “After the initial collision, the Hyundai rolled towards the southwest corner of Clark Avenue and Carson Street where it came to a stop against the curb.”
Officials said the 21-year-old was not wearing his seat belt. The 67-year-old was listed in stable condition, according to authorities.
