Spring is in the air! Plant lovers and gardening enthusiasts are in for a treat this weekend and will be given a chance to purchase plants and one-of-a-kind creations from dedicated Long Beach City College students.

The Sheet Metal students will join the Horticulture club for the 37th annual Plant Sale, April 8-11 from 9:00am-6:00pm, at the Pacific Coast Campus (PCC), selling their original garden art at a very affordable price.

Teaming up with the Horticulture Club for the fourth year in a row, the Sheet Metal Club is excited to start selling their metal plasma art, copper planter boxes, copper waterfalls, copper birdhouses, wrought iron furniture, bar-b-ques and other art. The sheet metal and wrought iron projects range from yard art, stating at a couple of dollars, to a complete wrought iron patio table and chairs for $350.

In addition to the iron work, thousands of plants will be on sale as the Long Beach City College Horticulture Club presents the traditional open house and Plant Sale in the Horticulture Gardens of the PCC.

The event will make student work available for the public to purchase at low grower prices. Among items for sale are tree and bush roses, shade and fruit trees, bedding plants, tomato, vegetable and herb plants and cacti.

“We like to showcase our own garden related wares that the club works hard at to produce every year,” Justin Johnson, sheet metal major, said. “We try to align many of our projects to coincide with the horticulture theme. This year, we have created many new items that are priced under 20 dollars.”

Proceeds from all sales will go to benefit the Sheet Metal Club and assist with scholarships, field trips, student projects, and support the program. The club is also involved with community outreach programs and helps undecided high school students make career decisions. The department has also had a significant growth from 20 students in  2005 to 78 this spring.

“We desire to be creative and make things people like and we hope to share our work with them,” Johnson said. “ We have a fascination with metalworking and how things are made. We love using computers to take our ideas and form them into pieces of art for others to enjoy.”
