11:20am | Some disadvantaged children from around the city will have a very unique back-to-school shopping experience on August 20th, where they will be helped by police officers. The Shop With a Cop event is being organized by the Long Beach Police Foundation in partnership with the Long Beach Junior Chamber, with assistance from the Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach, Target Stores, the Assistance League, and Worthington Ford.

Long Beach Firefighters Local #372 will be providing and cooking breakfast for the group. “We are thrilled to have our local firefighters join our police officers in working together on this event,” said Kathy Berry, LBPF director in a statement.

Children are pre-selected by the Girls and Boys Club of Long Beach and invited to be guests of the event.  Each child is paired with a Long Beach Police Officer, and/or Community Service Officer, a LBJC member or an adult shopper volunteer to help purchase school supplies and clothing. For some of these children, this is the only time new school clothing will be purchased. The Assistance League of Long Beach will provide each child with a new backpack.
